My Father-in-law

One of the hardest things about elder care is watching someone you love literally and figuratively shrink away from you.

I met my father-in-law on the same day I met my wife, 43 years ago.  On that day he said to his wife, “Jill’s going to marry that boy.”  I knew my father-in-law longer than I knew my own father.

My father-in-law was a very generous man both to his family and to strangers.  He helped us with the down payment on our home, the very same home that he came to live in with us during the final seven years of his life.  He also contributed to many charitable foundations like Covenant House.

He was a robust, physically active man who enjoyed long walks in any kind of weather.  Towards the end of his life that changed and walking to the front door was a challenge.  He lost his appetite and lost weight.

We tried to include my father-in-law in all of our family activities with limited success.  He seemed to lose interest very quickly.

We all miss him very much.
