The first excuse in planning for elder care is that neither you nor they have an idea where everything is. It is just too much to do. In our case, my father-in-law and his second wife lived five hours away and we visited every six weeks or so. We didn’t visit with him to talk paperwork.
He had an office in the basement that was filled with papers. He had is own system of filing. I did not know who is accountant was. So of course, we didn’t talk planning. He had drawn up a revocable living trust in 1995 and we left it at that.
We should have started at least a general conversation with him about his financial affairs. We could have asked him where all his vital papers were stored in the event of an accident or something unexpected happened. At 89 years old the projected lifespan is 4 or 5 more years. We could have found out the name of his lawyer and account.
I know a couple who realized that their house was too much to manage, sold it before the housing meltdown, and moved into a continuing care community.
