Elder care: Eating
There is one sure correlation in elder care and it is this: The chances that a senior citizen will wind up in a nursing home will be dramatically reduced if the loved one has a daughter. A daughter will fight to keep her parent at home.
I saw this reality played out in our homecare for my wife’s father. Jill had promised her father many times that he would never go into a nursing home, or if he had to go into one it would only be if our care for him would be more harmful than beneficial to him.
This commitment had to be translated into useful action. That required patience, ingenuity, perseverance, and cooperation. For example, this is how we managed to get my father-in-law to eat.
Eating could be contentious. With age the taste buds change and food becomes less flavorful. After a full day of care it became frustrating for me to prepare dinner for him only to be told, “This is terrible,” or “I’m not hungry.” To complicate the issue, I had to be concerned with his protein level because he was on kidney dialysis and maintaining the proper amount of protein was critical for his health. I couldn’t add salt because of his blood pressure.
So what Jill and I came up with was to get the delicatessen to slice turkey breast a quarter inch thick. We would then cut those slices in half, place the separate pieces in a baggie, and freeze them. When it came time for dinner we simply placed the frozen slice in a small pan, add a tablespoon or two of apricot jam heated it for a few minutes, and bingo, dinner was ready. He liked apricot jam so eating dinner was made easy.

This may be a little off topic, but do you have any advice on ways that I can make the bathroom a little safer for my mother? She fell and broke her hip and was recently released from the hospital and I can’t afford to have the bathroom remodeled. are there any low cost options that I can consider? Thanks
