Elder Care: Dressing and Grooming
What I described in my last few posts are the activities of daily living, toileting, showering, eating and now I will write about the last two, dressing and grooming. In elder care all these activities are important for two reasons. The first is how they affect your schedule (everything takes so long to do) and who can you get to do them when you can’t be there. This is especially poignant when it comes to toileting.
I always tried to give my father-in-law as much privacy as possible while balancing my concern for his safety. He sometimes tried to clean himself up but this required sometimes twisting into awkward positions beyond his ability. So I had to be especially vigilant and competent to deal with bathroom visits. To ask Jill or the children to do the same was something I hoped never to rely upon.
Fortunately, most of his bowel movements were in the morning when I was there and, as with most elderly, they don’t have bowel movements every day. In the whole time he lived with us, Jill had to toilet him only three times.
The other reason the activities of daily living are important is that some long term care insurances will pay for home care only if the LO can’t do some of the activities of daily living.
Dressing was made a whole lot easier when I exchanged his starched shirts and dry cleaned pants for all cotton clothes from Old Navy. This saved on dry cleaning bills and laundry service because I could easily wash everything. Older people are less fastidious about eating and spill food and drink a lot, especially gelatin desserts. I had to be careful when dressing him because bending or stretching were sometimes painful.
There are devices that will enable the elderly to dress themselves. Using those devices they can pull on their socks, button their shirts and zip up their clothes. AllegroMedical.com is an excellent source for some truly imaginative products. A local medical supply house or talking with an occupational therapist are other ways of getting ideas.
My father-in-law could groom himself and it wasn’t much of an issue after I removed his razors. I replaced them with an electric razor but had to discard that one also. He would try and clean it by taking it apart and would lose some of the pieces. I eventually got a Braun Self Cleaning electric razor. When we went for a haircut I asked the barber to shave him also.
That was our daily routine.
