My wife, Jill, and I started to take care of her father when he was 89 years old. We never expected to do so because his second wife was 10 years younger than he was and they had lived an independent life for over thirty years. Then she died unexpectedly and quickly.
We had to care for him because he could no longer drive. A car was a necessity where lived.
We were and are happily married. We raised four lovely children. They were living with us when my father-in-law came to stay with us.
We tried to do our best in caring for him. Jill promised her father that we would do whatever it took to keep him out of a nursing home. We cared for him for seven years. We lived up to that promise.
This is our story.
